Love them or loathe them, sports are prominent fixtures in schools and society. Fortunately, accounting for sports culture in the classroom offers teachers a wealth of possibilities for advancing literacy teaching and learning. Join Luke Rodesiler, Ph.D., co-editor of Developing Contemporary Literacies through Sports: A Guide for the English Classroom (NCTE, 2016), in exploring the ways teachers can foster critical literacy practices to examine issues of power, privilege, and marginalization in sports culture and beyond. Incorporating a variety of print and non-print texts, we'll consider multiple dimensions of critical literacy, examine sociopolitical issues that emerge in sports culture, and consider methods for examining the intersections of sport and society to teach for social justice.
