Online education presents some unique challenges for instructors who need to assess students while ensuring that academic integrity is maintained. This video explores research that helps us understand why students sometimes feel the need to cheat on tests, and offers several solutions to help assess students while reducing the chances of violating academic integrity. Quality online teaching begins with an understanding of course design and connecting activities and assessments to outcomes, and this framework can help instructors construct assessment strategies that are meaningful, relevant, and low-stress which helps reduce instances of cheating. While traditional tests and exams can be used in online courses, there are many alternative strategies such as frequent low-stakes quizzes, group presentations, video interviews, and digital deliverables that are good to consider as well.
