I'm Bryan Edwards, professor in the management department of Spears School of Business and also the Ph.D. coordinator.
This is the best job in the world. We have a lot of autonomy in terms of what we study, how we structure our time. It really has an entrepreneurial feel to it because we get to study what we're passionate about. I also enjoy working with and mentoring PhD students. You also have the option of working with undergraduates or teaching MBA students as well.
We have two general tracks, organizational behavior and strategic management. Strategic management deals with how companies make strategic decisions that impact, you know, the bottom line or the shareholders. You can study topics such as leadership, resource allocation, strategic decision making. Organizational behavior, focuses on work related attitudes, behaviors, cognitions among individuals and teams at work.
OSU has a history of student placements at other top tier universities. Every student will publish anywhere from one to five research articles by the time they finish. Every student will land an academic job. You can expect starting salaries in the range of $150,000 - $200,000 depending on your placement. While a Ph.D. student, we pay you a $30,000 stipend. We pay your tuition and fees, and your conference travel costs. We also have a behavioral lab where you can collect research data in experimental settings. We have access to dozens of companies all over the world where you can collect data. We have access to many databases with existing data that you can analyze to test some of your hypotheses.
Students will take a full-load of classes in the first two years, while also conducting research. Because we want to get you engaged in research from day one, we assign you to a research advisor for a first year project. We will assign you to a different advisor for a second year project, and then you will wind up working with two or three other faculty in years three and four. You get to choose your advisor that will mentor you for your dissertation, usually that occurs in year three. Then, you will finalize the dissertation in year four, and go on to market in year five.
We would love to have you join the Cowboy Family. You can find a lot more information on the management department website at Spears School of Business or scan the QR code on this page.
