From Daniel Farris
1) Determining whether the shrub or tree blooms on new wood or old wood will let you know when that shrub or tree should be pruned.
2) Trim out dead and diseased plant material first, then trim out any crossing branches.
3) Create an open canopy to allow better airflow which will reduce the potential for plant diseases.
4) Don't remove more than 1/3 of the plant.
