Transcript:
My name is John Holden. I'm a part of the management faculty here in the Spears School of Business. My primary focus is on Sports Law and Business Law.
Social issues and sports management class is a class that really focuses on the hottest topics in sports law. Every semester, we spend a lot of time picking out what are the hottest topics in sports and then we build. the class around those so that we cover the same things that you're seeing in the news over a eight week course. In the past and one of the topics that we're doing again this summer is covering NIL. changes and changes surrounding the NCAA and how that's affecting college sports.
Another one that have we've done in the past and and I think we're going to do again is athlete speech. How that interacts with the law. There's a lot of misunderstandings about how private companies like the NFL can regulate an athlete's speech versus what the law actually says. So when athletes want to voice an opinion on any sort of issue so Colin Kaepernick is probably the most prominent of the the recent examples into that, and what happened with his career in the NFL is one of the topics that we look at.
Another topic that we look at looks at Mega events. Things like the FIFA World Cup and some of the scandals that have followed the awarding of these competitions. One of the things we look at is is some of the laws that have come out of these major events and. how international communities have tried to reign in the corruption surrounding these things.
