As the mayor of Tulsa, G.T. Bynum is a strong proponent of the value of education, including higher education. Prior to his election as mayor, he served for eight years on the Tulsa City Council. During that time, he was elected as the youngest city council chairman in Tulsa history. He has served in other governmental roles, including working for both U.S. Senators Don Nickles and Tom Coburn. He was managing partner of Capitol Ventures Government Relations in Tulsa for about eight years. Before that, he was senior director of government affairs for Williams and Williams Companies. Mayor Bynum grew up in a family with a long history of government service. His great- great- grandfather was the second mayor of Tulsa when the city was still part of Indian Territory and Oklahoma was a few years from statehood. His grandfather, Robert J. LaFortune, was the mayor of Tulsa from 1970 to 1978. And his uncle, Bill LaFortune served as mayor from 2002 to 2006. However, Mayor Bynum has made a name for himself on his own and is setting out an exciting path for Tulsa.
