Hello! This is Irissa Baxter, I am the Coordinator of Women’s and LGBTQ Affairs in the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Oklahoma State University. I am uploading this video today to let yall know about a video series we will be doing this week to celebrate LGBTQ Pride. Every year at OSU, we celebrate with a week or more of exciting events highlighting our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. In accordance with OSU’s coronavirus updates, however, we have had to cancel all of our programming for this year. But that does not mean that pride has to stop! To celebrate LGBTQ pride while acknowledging the need for social distancing, we will be uploading a series of videos throughout this week showcasing pride and experiences of the LGBTQ community. These videos will be made, like this one, by members of the LGBTQ community, and will be uploaded daily between today, Monday, March 30th, and Friday, April 3rd.
Tomorrow, which is March 31st, is Transgender Day of Visibility. To celebrate Transgender Day of Visibility, Dr. Dakota Raynes from the department of Sociology will be joining us to speak about trans history and issues. On Wednesday, April 1st, Andy Baker, the previous President of Oklahoma State Queers and Allies, which is OSU’s LGBTQ student organization, will be speaking about their journey to find pride in their identity. On Thursday, Ami Rhetto, a fantastic local drag queen, will be joining us to do Drag Queen Story Hour and reading the book Red: A Crayon’s Story for children. On Friday, I will be back to talk about the exciting mayoral proclamation that was made this month to support the LGBTQ community in Stillwater.
Before I wrap up, I just want to reach out and say that I miss everyone and that I hope everyone is doing wonderfully well right now. I know this is kinda a scary and uncertain time, but please know that I am still here! JUst because I am at my house does not mean I am not available, I am still checking my email and my voicemail every single day, so please do reach out if you need anything. And I will see yall tomorrow when we hear from Dr. Dakota Raynes! Thank you!
